Indian Street Food in Victoria: Your Guide to Chaat, Samosas & Kadak Chai
Chaat, samosas, pakoras and kadak chai: a quick guide to Indian street food and where to eat it in Victoria, BC.

In India, some of the best food isn't served at a table. It's handed over at a roadside stall: a paper plate of chaat, a hot samosa, a small glass of chai so strong it wakes you up. Crunchy, tangy, sweet and spicy all at once.
You don't need a plane ticket to try it. Here's a quick guide to Indian street food and where to eat it in Victoria, BC.
What is chaat?
Chaat comes from a Hindi word meaning "to lick", as in licking your fingers. It's a family of snacks built on contrast: something crispy, something soft, cool yogurt, and two chutneys, one sweet and one sharp.
Two classics to start with:
- Bombay Special Papdi Chaat: crisp dough wafers topped with potatoes, yogurt and sweet chutney. Light and refreshing.
- Old Delhi Samosa Chaat: a samosa crushed and loaded with yogurt, chutneys and spices. Heartier, and our most talked-about starter.
Eat chaat right away. The magic is in the crunch, and it softens fast.
The samosa, done properly
A good samosa has thin, blistered pastry that shatters when you bite it, and a filling of potatoes and peas that's spiced, not bland. Ours is the Punjabi Veg Samosa. Have it plain with chutney, or turn it into samosa chaat.
Searching for samosa poutine? It's a fun Canadian mash-up, but it's not on our menu. If you want that crispy-saucy-cheesy hit, try the samosa chaat or the paneer pakoda instead.
Pakoras and fried favourites
- Chef's Special Paneer Pakoda: Indian cheese in a spiced chickpea-flour batter
- Amritsari Fish Pakoda: tender fish in a spiced rice-flour batter, a Punjab street classic
- Chennai Special Chicken 65: spicy fried chicken bites with curry leaves (halal)
These are great for sharing before a main, or as a light lunch on their own.
Kadak chai: the real thing
Kadak means strong. Our Kadak Chai is brewed with cardamom, ginger and cinnamon, and served hot. It's nothing like a chai latte. Pair it with a samosa on a grey Victoria afternoon and you'll understand why chai stalls never close.
Prefer something cold? The Mango Lassi is thick yogurt blended with ripe mango and a touch of rose water.
Something sweet to finish
Gulab jamun are warm milk dumplings soaked in syrup. Shahi kheer is creamy rice pudding with cardamom and nuts. Both pair perfectly with chai.
Your first street food order
New to it? For two people, try one samosa chaat, one papdi chaat, a plate of Chicken 65 or paneer pakoda, and two kadak chais. Under an hour, big on flavour.
