Halal Food in Victoria, BC: Where to Find It and What to Order
People ask us about the meat before they've even looked at a menu. Here's the short answer, plus the halal dishes in Victoria our regulars order most and where to find us on Bridge Street.

Ask around for halal food in Victoria and you'll get a short list. Ask specifically for halal Indian food and that list gets shorter still.
We hear about it constantly at Zaika by JJ. People come in and ask about the meat before they've even opened a menu, usually a bit apologetically, because they've had to ask a hundred times before and the answer is often complicated.
Ours isn't. Every chicken, goat, and lamb dish we serve is 100% halal. Not the specials. Not one section of the menu. All of it.
Here's what that looks like on the plate, and where to find us on Bridge Street. If you'd rather skip ahead, the full menu is here.
Why Halal Food in Victoria Is Harder to Find Than It Should Be
Victoria is a small city with a community that has grown a lot over the past decade, and the restaurant scene hasn't entirely caught up. Plenty of places will tell you they're "halal-friendly." In practice that usually means the kitchen is happy to accommodate you but can't say much about where the meat actually came from.
Anyone who keeps halal knows that difference immediately. It's the whole reason people ask at the door instead of trusting the menu.
So we keep it simple. We source halal meat, we don't mix it with anything else, and if you ask where it comes from we'll tell you. Chef Jahir Shaikh has been cooking this food for decades, and the sourcing question was settled long before we opened the doors. There's more on how he cooks if you're curious.
The Halal Dishes in Victoria Our Regulars Order Most
New here? Start with one of these.
Lucknow Chicken Dum Biryani. Rice and marinated halal chicken cook together under a sealed lid so none of the steam escapes. It takes as long as it takes, which is why we don't speed it up on a busy Friday. If you want the long version of how dum cooking works, we wrote about it in our Chicken Dum Biryani guide.
Old Delhi Butter Chicken. The chicken goes into the tandoor before it ever touches the sauce. That's the step most kitchens skip, and it's why ours tastes smoky rather than just creamy. Probably the most-ordered halal butter chicken on our menu.
Kashmir Special Lamb Rogan Josh. Kashmiri-style, not the tomato-forward version that turns up on most Canadian menus. The lamb braises slowly until it gives way without any effort at all. More on why the slow braise matters.
Bihari Goat Curry. Bone-in, in a spiced onion gravy. If you grew up eating goat, you already know why the bone stays in.
Chennai Special Chicken 65. Crisp, hot, tossed with fresh curry leaves. Order it while you're still deciding on the rest.
What to Look For in a Halal Restaurant in Victoria BC
A few things worth checking, at our place or anywhere else:
- Ask how much of the menu is halal. One or two dishes is a very different promise from a full meat menu.
- Ask how the food is cooked. Whole spices toasted to order and a real tandoor take time. Pre-made curry bases don't.
- Ask who runs the kitchen. Ours is family-owned, and there's no franchise recipe binder involved.
- Check the vegetarian side too. Mixed groups shouldn't have to negotiate. Roughly half our menu is vegetarian.
